Kreni-Promeni movement: The affair in Portugal raises suspicions of lithium mining in Serbia as well

The Kreni-Promeni movement warned today that the affair in Portugal “raises suspicion” that corruption is the main motive why politicians in Serbia “still try to revive the Jadar lithium project”.

Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa resigned earlier today following the arrest of his chief of staff for alleged corruption related to a lithium mine concession.

“Lithium is currently not being exploited anywhere in Europe because it obviously causes great controversy everywhere.” In Serbia, the exploitation of lithium is the most difficult because it is not found in water but in jadarite ore and will certainly cause the greatest damage to the environment. “It is obvious that the extraction of lithium in populated areas poses a danger to people’s health and that the lithium business is accompanied by corruption,” the statement said.

The movement asked what kind of contract the representatives of the Government of Serbia signed with the European Commission on the “exploitation” of lithium and how it is possible for such a document to be signed “when  the Government stopped the lithium mining project in Jadar”.

“We demand and consider it very necessary that the ambassadors and representatives of the European Union and all countries that advocate for the exploitation of lithium in Serbia, which include both Western countries and China, declare on this issue,” stated the Kreni-Promeni movement.
